Parts / materials

  • Terminal protector if specified

Preparation

  • Switch everything off, remove the key, and verify the maker’s disconnect procedure.

Step by step

  1. 01Identify positive (+, usually red-covered) and negative (−, usually connected to body ground).
  2. 02Disconnect the negative terminal first and isolate it so it cannot spring back.
  3. 03Disconnect positive only if removal is required. Secure the battery upright.
  4. 04Reconnect positive first, then negative. Tighten securely without crushing the posts.
  5. 05Restore required settings and verify normal starting and warning-light behavior.

What success looks like

Terminals are secure, polarity is correct, and the vehicle starts without abnormal warnings.

Common mistakes

  • Reversing polarity
  • Letting a tool bridge positive to metal
  • Working on a swollen or leaking battery
